Ready for Read Across America

March is just around the corner and I'm putting the finishing touches on our plans for Read Across America week.  Here's what the week looks like:

Friday, March 10th   Cat in the Hat Door Decorating Contest Dress Like a Book Character Day!

I am so thankful for our school organizations that are participating by sponsoring events, and taking the lead on some of the activities.  ASB and PTA have both answered the call to help, organize, and purchase items needed for the week.
Our big community event for Read Across America this year is our "Reading Under the Stars" read aloud event.  We have invited our families to bring their chairs and blankets and enjoy an hour of story time with our guest storytellers.  The PTA will be serving cookies and cocoa (and coffee for the adults).  Here's hoping for weather that cooperates!

If you haven't prepared anything yet for Read Across America, there's still time.  Elementary Librarian has seven suggestions for how to celebrate this national event, in which we recognize Dr. Seuss' contribution to children's literacy.  And, Seussville.com also have plenty of activities and printouts.
Whatever you do to celebrate Read Across America in March, don't forget to have fun, share a book, and remember that we do it to share our love of reading and all things Dr. Seuss!

  Beginning of the Year Checklist It's that time of year again.  Time to get the space ready for the patrons' return. There are a hundred things to think about and to plan for before the first patron walks through the doors.  It is always helpful to me to have a list of things I need to check off in preparation for the first day.  Here's a list that I found helpful when working at a school site.  Initially I began with a print copy, then migrated to a digital one.  Feel free to make a copy and edit as needed for your own site.  As we know, no two sites are the same, which is as it should be.  Each library should fit the needs of its community.   How do you keep track of your tasks?  Feel free to share in the comments.

Read Across America Week Activities

For our school site, we held Read Across America Week during the week of March 6th.  I thought I'd share some of the highlights. For Monday, the Library Helpers Club and the 5th grade ASB hosted Dr. Seuss games during the recess periods. Students participating in the Read while Hoola-Hooping game Students participating in the Dr. Seuss ring toss game. On Tuesday, we had the mayor of Fontana visit the school and  be the first to sign our school banner.  Those who signed the banner pledged to read every day. For Wednesday, our site hosted a "Reading Under the Stars" community event.  We invited our students and their families to bring their blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks and join us for story time under the stars.  We were able to project the picture book pages on a blank wall, and used a microphone to read the stories aloud.  My school district's Library Director was able to attend, and not only did she share a fabulous retelling of Cloudy wi

Read Alouds for March, 2016

All Things Green Frog Song by Brenda Z. Guiberson, illustrated by Gennady Spirin A non-fiction picture book that shares information about frogs from around the world.  The illustrations are vibrant and have a beautiful photographic quality, and the onomatopoetic text makes it fun to read.
